In October, we shared that Chinese automotive giant Chery was about to launch its second electric vehicle into the Australian market.
Chinese car giant has revealed the specs of its upcoming Jaecoo J5 EV, its second EV in the Australia market and one that will fall under the global carmaker’s adventure-ready sub-brand.
The rugged-looking J5 EV will be arriving in dealerships next month and will come in with a single variant, called the Track, whichĀ Roy Munoz, chief commercial officer of Omoda Jaecoo Australia and New Zealand hopes will be a compelling addition to an already competitive market.
“No other vehicle currently offers a pet-friendly interior and a large selection of accessories, which range from a dog carrier to a waterproof cargo mat, and even a karaoke machine.ā

Powering the J5 Track is a front-mounted 155 kW motor that produces 288 Nm or torque. It helps accelerate the car from 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds which is fairly respectable for electric mid-size SUVs.
On the range front, the new model will deliver up to 402 km of WLTP range and can be charged at a DC charger, with 30-80% session coming in around 28 minutes.
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) is also on offer to power electrical equipment when needed on an adventure, or in the home in case of a blackout.
Although local specs of the battery were not shared, we expect it to be the 60.9 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery pack, found in other right-hand-drive markets.
This powertrain will also allow for a maximum towing capacity of around 750kg.
There are also more details in the released specs including dimensions and tyre sizes, with the J5 EV coming in near 4.4 metres in length. It will also be coming in with 18-inch wheels, that are pretty standard of this size of SUV.

On the inside, there is a 13.2-inch vertical screen that controls things such as air conditioning, digital radio and vehicle settings.Ā For those looking to connect their phones and using phoneās apps inside, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also available as standard.
There is also a 50 W wireless charger on offer, and sits just under the screen inside the minimalist cabin.
The new J5 comes with quite a few safety features as standard, including:
- 7 airbags
- Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
- Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK)
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
Given the adventure-focused nature of the brand, the J5 features a pet-friendly synthetic leather which is made of a special silicone-based material. This material makes the seats of the car antibacterial and wear-resistant, and also easier to clean.
The Jaeoo J5 EV will also come with a very progressive 8-year unlimited kilometre warranty, 8 years of capped priced servicing and 8-year unlimited kilometre battery warranty.

Pricing is expected to be announced in the next month or so before the car makes it to Chery showrooms in January.
We look forward to testing this car on Australian roads in the coming weeks and sharing what itās like in this very competitive segment.
