Volkswagen has finally announced the pricing of its long-awaited electric SUVs, the ID.4 and ID.5, while dubbing both models “simply better electric SUVs”.

The ID.4 and the slightly larger ID.5 have been available in Europe for years, and the ID.4 in particularly has done well in markets such as Norway. But they have yet to be offered to the Australian market.

Now they will. The ID.4, in its Pro variant, will start at $59,990, while the ID.5 in the GTX variant bumps that up to $72,990 before on-roads.

The ID.4 Pro comes with a rear-wheel-drive powertrain that delivers 210 kW of power and 545 Nm of torque.

This variant also sits on 19-inch wheels and offers progressive steering thanks to the adaptive chassis control and suspension. From this setup, ID.4 Pro can sprint from 0-100 km/h in a respectable 6.7 seconds.

This powertrain is fed by a large 82 kWh, which delivers a claimed WLTP range of up to 544 km. Charging this battery can be done via an 11 kW AC charger or at the right DC charger with peak speeds of up to 175 kW on offer.

The ID.5 GTX has a dual-motor AWD powertrain, delivering a boost to the power figure, which comes to 250 kW. This variant sits on slightly bigger 20-inch wheels.

Looking at the battery on that model which is also slightly bigger than the ID.4, coming in at 84 kWh. This helps deliver up to 522 km of WLTP range, lower than the ID.4 due to its dual-motor powertrain. It also helps reduce the acceleration time with  0-100 km/h coming down to 5.4 seconds.

For comparison, both the Tesla Model Y and the recently launched BYD Sealion 7, have much quicker acceleration. With the dual-motor Tesla, the charging speeds are also much higher, peaking at 250 kW at the superchargers.

Charging speeds for the battery remain the same due to the same electrical architecture that underpins both models.

The ID.5 GTX is sleeker in its looks compared to the ID.4 and also features a 12-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system as standard.

Both models appear to be equipped with quite a bit of standard features, including matrix LED headlamps with adaptive high beam, 3D LED rear lights with dynamic indicators, keyless access, power tailgate, panoramic roof with electric blind, microfleece upholstery, power-adjustable front seats with memory and massage function, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, tri-zone climate control air conditioning,12.9-inch infotainment with App-Connect and Area View 360-degree camera.

Discounted pricing on home and on-the-go charging will be provided as part of VW’s partnership with Ampol.

“Volkswagen is delivering on that promise with high specification for the price, higher outputs and longer range than most rivals, with the pedigree of German engineering and the local focus on making BEV ownership easy,” Volkswagen passenger vehicles director Piergiorgio Minto said in a statement.

“As the only brand that has consistently made performance petrol SUVs available to customers, the ID. 4 Pro and ID. 5 GTX now speak directly to Tiguan customers and SUV customers with BEV and petrol pricing aligned. Whether refuelled or recharged, Volkswagen has a leading SUV available.”

The ID.4 and ID.5 will be on display at the Everything Electric March show in Sydney, with first deliveries to begin around mid-2025.

With growing competition in the mid-sized SUV segments thanks to the recently refreshed Tesla Model Y and the brand new Sealion 7, both expected to have starting prices under the ID.4 Pro, Volkswagen could have a tough job ahead.
