Porsche has been one of the few sports car brands that have had electric vehicles on offer in Australia. Now it has announced a high performance variant of the Taycan sports EV, but it won’t leave buyers much change from half a million dollars.
The new Taycan Turbo GT sedan with Weissach package has just been launched and it boasts some impressive performance specs, including a new dual-motor powertrain that propels the car from 0-100 km/h in 2.2 seconds. This makes it the fastest-accelerating car currently on the market.
That’s faster than the Taycan Turbo S variant which was the top variant of the 2024 model launched last month which does this sprint in 2.4 seconds.
The new Taycan can produce up to 760 kW of power which can also be increased up to 815 kW for two seconds, when overtaking on a race track. Along with that, 1340 Nm or torque is on offer.
The top speed of this variant has also been increased to 305 km/h which is up from 290 km/h from the standard Taycan Turbo S.
This performance has helped Porsche set a record lap time around the famous Nürburgring track, lapping it in 7:07:55 which is 18 seconds faster than the Tesla Model S Plaid with the track pack that went around the track last year.
The new Taycan Turbo GT sedan with Weissach package has some other unique features not found on the other variants. One of these includes what Porsche calls “attack-mode”. When this is initiated, up to 120 kW of additional power is available for 10 seconds by pressing a button in the car.
Another area of focus with this variant has been the weight saving, with it coming in 70 kg less than the standard Taycan.
That’s thanks to the replacement of various steel sections with aluminium and the removal of the rear seats. This area has been replacement with a carbon-fibre trim along with additional storage.
Although Porsche didn’t reveal the battery that’s powering the drivetrain, the new 2024 Taycan’s 105 kWh battery pack will be likely be used on this track-focused sedan. Like the other Taycan variants, it would offer 800 V architecture, helping the car charger from 10-80% in just 18 minutes.
Local pricing of the new Taycan Turbo GT has also been revealed, and it comes in at $416,600 before-on roads. In NSW, it translates into a starting driveway price of $449,160. This is over $40,000 above the Porsche Taycan Turbo S.
It can be ordered now from Porsche’s local website with deliveries expected later this year.
