Volkswagen has now received a five-star ANCAP safety rating for it’s upcoming ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs. This comes after the brand’s first electric vehicle in Australia, the Cupra Born, also received a five-star rating earlier this year.
Both electric SUVs from Volkswagen are now available for buyers in New Zealand. This is applicable to vehicles made after July 2023 with build dates after April 2023. Variants covered under the newly received rating include:
- Volkswagen ID.4 PRO
- Volkswagen ID.4 PRO+
- Volkswagen ID.5 PRO
- Volkswagen ID.5 PRO+
Both the ID.4 and ID.5 were assessed using ANCAP’s 2020 – 2022 criteria and showed high adult occupant protection scores. Frontal and side impact was also well handled by both these SUVs.
The cars under side-impact test however didn’t perform too well, particularly for vehicle-to-pole test.
The breakdown of the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 ANCAP test results were:
- 76% for Safety Assist features
- 76% for Vulnerable Road User protection
- 93% for Adult Occupant protection
- 89% for Child Occupant protection
With that in mind, ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg did provide feedback on how Volkswagen can improve on this score by highlighting the specification missing from the New Zealand market as of the time of testing:
“We’d encourage Volkswagen to consider including speed limit information functionality in future upgrades, to ensure all buyers are provided with the same level of safety specification as offered in the European market,”.
The ID.4 and ID.5 is available to pre-order in New Zealand with a starting price of $NZ79,990, which makes it eligible for the local clean car rebate.
At this stage, Volkswagen is not offering either models for pre-sale on its website in Australia, but this could be changing in the coming months.
