Car giant Nissan Motors has announced the purchase has of a Japanese lithium-ion EV battery business, Vehicle Energy Japan, which produces battery cells and packs and advanced battery management system technologies.

Vehicle Energy Japan is already a key supplier to Nissan and its acquisition will provide access to a stable battery supplier while also providing an opportunity to contribute to the development of next-generation batteries.

Nissan’s acquisition of Vehicle Energy Japan is framed as part of its larger Ambition 2030 vision, which aims to create significant value beyond the mobility sector as well as centre electrification in its business strategy.

Nissan unveiled its Ambition 2030 strategy in November, 2021, which also promised the launch of 23 new electrified models including 15 new EVs by 2030. Unlike some companies, though, Nissan is only aiming at 50 per cent electrification by the end of the decade.
