Volvo and Geely electric subsidiary Polestar will debut its powerful new electric platform this weekend at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed featuring 650kW and an 800V architecture which will underlie the company’s Polestar 5.
Polestar announced earlier this week that it would be debuting the Polestar 5 electric performance 4-door GT prototype at the famous Goodwood Festival and will also take the Polestar 5 up the iconic Goodwood Hill.
The Polestar 5, which has evolved out of the Polestar Precept concept car that the company showed off in early 2020, is the third of three new EVs Polestar expects to launch over the next three years – preceded by the already released Polestar 2, and the forthcoming Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 electric SUVs.
But the signature vehicle dynamics of the Polestar 5 have necessitated a new powertrain developed by Polestar’s UK team, a unique bonded aluminium chassis. Development of the new powertrain is ongoing in Sweden, but we do know that the Polestar 5 will boast a new rear electric motor providing superior output, along with an 800-volt architecture.
The combined output from the front and rear motors will deliver output of 650kW, or 884 horsepower, and 900Nm of torque.
“The new powertrain we are working on will set a new brand benchmark in our high-performing cars,” said Jörg Brandscheid, Polestar’s CTO and head of R&D.
“Combining strong electric motor engineering ability with advances in light-weight platform technology is leading to truly stunning driver’s cars.”
The Polestar 5 will complete two runs up the Goodwood Hill each day during the event as part of the “First Glance” group of cars, but we shouldn’t expect to see an official launch until some time in 2024.
“Polestar 5 is shaping up to be a superb 4-door GT and a true Polestar at heart,” said Pete Allen, head of Polestar UK R&D.
“The platform combines low-volume performance car attributes with modern technological advances to bring light-weight, high-rigidity sports car chassis technology into mass production.”
Alongside the Polestar 5, Polestar is also displaying a new high-performance limited-edition Polestar 2 BST edition 270 and the Polestar Precept and the company’s electric roadster concept.
