Volvo Trucks, the world’s second largest manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks, has received an order for 100 Volvo FM Electric trucks from Northern Europe’s largest shipping and logistics company, DFDS, its biggest ever electric order.
The trucks will begin delivery in the fourth quarter of 2022 and continue throughout 2023, and will replace conventional trucks on its European network.
Volvo’s FM Electric is available in multiple tractor and rigid configurations and can carry a gross combination weight of up to 44 tonnes while still delivering all-electric range of up to 300-kilometres. Battery capacity varies depending on the number of batteries, which range from 2 to 6, providing between 180 and 540kWh to 2 to 3 electric motors.
Charge time for the FM Electric takes 9.5-hours with 43kW AC, and only 2.5-hours with 250kW DC charging.
“Electrification is an important element in (our) journey to reduce our carbon footprint. The electrical trucks will be in operations during 2022 and 2023 replacing conventional trucks, said Niklas Andersson, executive vice president and head of the Logistics Division at DFDS.
“These vehicles are best in their class, and we need to educate our drivers how to operate the trucks. DFDS will turn to Volvo’s expertise in eco-driving and our close collaboration will help DFDS stay competitive during this transition.”

Volvo claims that its electric trucks have accounted for approximately 40% of the several hundred electric heavy trucks above 16 tonnes that have been deployed in Europe so far this year – proof, according to the Gothenburg-based automotive giant, of the accelerating trend towards truck electrification.

“Our target for 2030 is that half of our global truck deliveries will be electric. We are pleased to see that growing interest among our customers is starting to be reflected in firm orders, not least by this impressive order from DFDS.”
Volvo Trucks began serial production of electric trucks back in 2019 and, since then, has developed six electric truck models including the Volvo FH, Volvo FM, Volvo FMX, Volvo FE, Volvo FL, and the Volvo VNR, sold in North America.
Volvo Trucks North America unveiled the Volvo VNR Electric semi-truck in late-2020. The Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric truck boasts zero tailpipe emissions and a 264-kWh lithium-ion battery providing a range of around 240-kilometres, and began production in early 2021 for North American markets.
Last month, Volvo Trucks announced an order for 16 of its VNR Electric trucks, the largest commercial order of the only battery-electric Class 8 model available in North America. The order, from Performance Team, a US-based warehousing and distribution company, is expected to see delivery start in the fourth quarter of 2021.
