Smart, a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and China’s Geely Holdings, has slashed the price of its two existing EVs in Australia, the #1 and #3 models, as it prepares for the launch of its next electric car in Australia.
The Smart #1 and #3, bigger than the previous petrol models, were launched in 2024, but has dropped prices on moth models by around $5,000, starting with smart #1 which is now available starting from $49,900*, while the smart #3 starts from $52,900 before on-road costs.
On top of that, the brand announced that it will finally be bringing the #5 SUV, which had its global debut in Byron Bay back in 2024.
This would be the brand’s biggest model so far and is expected to have its full launch “soon” according to the brand.
The Smart #5 is aiming for the premium mid-size SUV market, combining space and tech in a boxier-looking SUV body.
More details on the Smart #5, including its local specs and pricing will be announced in the coming months.
The Smart #1 and #3 models are both powered by 66 kWh battery packs that deliver ranges between 400 km and 455 km. All these packs have the Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (NCM) battery chemistry.
The entry-level Pro+ variant is powered by a single motor that produces up to 200 kW of power and delivers a peak torque of 343 Nm. This helps this variant propel from 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds for the #1 and 5.8 seconds for the #3.
The top-spec Brabus variant bumps these figures up, with two motors delivering up to 315 kW of power and 543 Nm of torque. This helps propel this SUV from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds for the #1 and 3.7 seconds for the #3.
With recent price cuts by similar models such as the Volvo EX30 and Zeekr X, it was only a matter of time before Smart followed suit.
Will this help the brand get more sales ahead of the launch of the #5? Time will tell, but from our drive of the models in 2024 and 2025, they are some of the nicer, more premium SUVs on the market.
