In December, we shared that Chinese automotive giant Chery launched its second electric vehicle in the Australian market under the Jaecoo sub-brand, the J5 EV.

Now the rugged-looking J5 EV, which only recently arrived in dealerships, has already surpassed 1,000 orders at its aggressive $36,990 driveaway launch price. The launch pricing has since been extended to the first 2,000 customers, broadening access to the offer.

Omoda Jaecoo’s Chief Commercial Officer, Roy Munoz said: “The response to the Jaecoo J5 has exceeded our expectations. Hitting 1,000 orders so quickly shows Australians are moving fast when an EV delivers the right mix of modern design, advanced technology and outstanding value. We’re seeing customers act early to secure their place in the queue.”

Powering the J5 is a front-mounted 155 kW motor that produces 288 Nm of torque. It helps accelerate the car from 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, which is quite respectable for electric mid-size SUVs.

On the range front, the new model will deliver up to 402 km of WLTP range and can be charged at a DC charger. A 30–80% DC fast-charge takes around 28 minutes.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) is also available to power electrical equipment when needed on an adventure or in the home in case of a blackout.

On the battery front, a 58.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack is what delivers to this powertrain.

On the inside, there is a 13.2-inch vertical screen that controls things such as air conditioning, digital radio and vehicle settings. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard for those wanting seamless smartphone integration. There is also a 50 W wireless charger on offer, and it sits just under the screen inside the minimalist cabin.

The new J5 comes with quite a few safety features as standard, including:

  • 7 airbags
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)

Jaecoo is Chery’s more rugged, lifestyle-oriented sub-brand, and the J5 features a pet-friendly synthetic leather that is made of a special silicone-based material. This material makes the car seats antibacterial, wear-resistant, and easier to clean.

The Jaecoo J5 EV will also come with a very progressive 8-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, 8 years of capped-priced servicing, and an 8-year, unlimited-kilometre battery warranty.

We are currently testing the new J5 EV and will have a review to follow. From our initial drive and the December launch event, it appears to offer compelling value, particularly against similarly priced ICE rivals.
