Chery’s first electric car in the Australian market, the affordable Omoda E5 SUV, has received a top rating of 5 stars for safety from ANCAP and is also offering a price cut of $3,000.

The pricing of the E5 has been reduced as an end-of-year bonus which would take the asking price of the entry-level E5 from $42,990 to $39,990 before on-roads, more evidence that the EV price war is not going away.

This is great value for an EV that delivers up to 430 km of range and is priced around $10,000 under the BYD Atto 3 extended range model.

The Omoda E5’s original pricing was announced back in September with the BX variant starting at $42,990 before on-road costs, and the top-spec EX, which was priced from $45,990 before state-specific on-roads.

The latest safety rating test results show that the Omoda E5 has received:

  • 87% for Adult Occupant Protection
  • 88% Child Occupant Protection
  • 83% Safety Assist

This 5-star rating also includes additional tests undertaken by ANCAP that cover the integrity of the batteries in EVs. These are the frontal offset and oblique pole crash tests,

“Our commitment to safety has always been at the core of what we do, and this 5-star safety rating is a testament to Chery’s engineering and technical prowess,” said Lewis Lu, CEO of Chery Australia.

This BX variant includes key features that make it a fairly well equipped entry-level model. These include:

  • Dual 12.3-inch screens
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 50W wireless phone charger

Moving up to the top EX trim, customers can get a powered sunroof, ambient interior lighting, 360-degree camera and 8-speaker sound system.

The BX and the EX variants of the Omoda E5 have 430 km of range, thanks to a 61 kWh battery pack.Ā

It also includes fast charging with the compatible CCS2 plug located at the front of the car. DC fast charging at the right charger can get the car from 30-80% in 28 minutes.

Given the latest 5-star ANCAP testing results and the current pricing, the Omoda E5 should be on the test drive shortlist for those looking at a compact electric SUV.
