A new 150-tonne battery electric water truck – one of the first big pieces of mining equipment leading the mining giant’s surge towards “real zero” emissions – has just left China and is en route to Western Australia and the company’s Pilbara mining operations
The battery electric truck, Jointly developed by Fortescue and Chinese heavy machinery equipment manufacturer XCMG, has now been dispatched from Xuzhou Port.
XCMG is also delivering several hundred heavy haul trucks and other electric mining vehicles and equipment for Fortescue, which is aiming to eliminate the use of diesel at its mine by the end of the decade.
Water trucks are used in mining operations to spray down dirt roads, suppressing dust that can otherwise quickly become a health hazard for workers and a compliance issue with environmental regulators.
The new water truck from XCMG has already been inspected and taken for a test drive earlier this year by Fortescue’s CEO, Dino Otranto, who described the experience as “smooth” and “powerful”.
