British automotive marque Range Rover has unveiled its first ever fully electric model, the Range Rover Electric, and it’s already available to order in Australia, starting from a mere $317,718 plus on-road costs.
The new Range Rover Electric boasts two 260-kilowatt (kW) motors, putting out up to 405 kW of power and 850Nm of torque, more than any Range Rover in the company’s 56-year history.
The company has been keen to highlight just how much more powerful and responsive its first electric vehicle is compared to previous internal combustion engine (ICE) versions, including traction management on any surface that responds in as little as 50 milliseconds – 100-times faster than a combustion-engine equivalent.
Single-pedal driving paired with Integrated Traction Management enables climbs up to 45 degrees, while a lower centre of gravity and twin-chamber air suspension enhances the vehicle’s driving dynamics, the company says.
“The defining characteristic of Range Rover Electric is its ability to perform across every surface, with effortless comfort and refinement,” said Matt Becker, vehicle engineering director at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
“We’ve worked tirelessly to ensure it retains those qualities. From challenging low-grip and rough terrain to smooth, high-speed roads, it remains incredibly composed and refined, with a real sense of control and confidence. The responsiveness and precision of the new driveline control systems, enabled by electric propulsion, perfectly support this. We’re very proud of the result.”
The motor is powered by double-stacked 118.5-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery with 800-volt technology, delivering an electric driving range of up to 600km (NEDC) and a so-called “real-world” range of up to 535km. It will accelerate from 0-100km/h in as little as 4.5 seconds and overtaking speeds from 80-120 km/h of just 2.7 seconds.
The Range Rover Electric is also expected to be the most patented Range Rover ever, with 300 patent applications already filed including the company’s ThermAssist heat management technology and the design of both battery and motors made at parent company JLR’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in the UK.
The Range Rover Electric is available in Australia, starting from $317,718 for the base level HSE variant, $357,718 for the Autobiography model, and $417,418 for the SV (all prices before on-roads).
There was no specific date given for when deliveries would start.
