The makers of one of the very first electric utes in Australia have confirmed that the vehicles sold to date – more than 300 since their launch in November last year – did not included two important airbags that were advertised as included.
Separate statements from KGM and ANCAP on Friday said the Musso EV delivered so far are missing a centre airbag and the driver knee airbag, despite being originally advertised as included by the brand.
The mission airbags were picked up by the safety agency ANCAP, which issued a consumer alert on Friday. The Musso does not have a safety rating from ANCAP.
“Australian customers who have purchased or are considering purchasing the battery-electric KGM Musso EV dual cab utility are advised that vehicles supplied since its market introduction in November 2025 are not fitted with either a centre airbag or driver knee airbag,” it said.
“These safety features were marketed by KGM as being present on Musso EV vehicles as part of a standard suite of “8 airbags”, with references featured in their consumer vehicle specification brochure and website.
“A centre airbag – advertised by KGM as “front row far-side” or “front seat centre airbag” – is an occupant-protecting airbag generally positioned inboard within the driver’s seat back to reduce injury in side impact crashes.
“A driver knee airbag serves to manage occupant movement and loading during a crash, and – where fitted – is housed in the lower portion of the dash beneath the steering column.”
Customers with concerns are advised to get in touch with KGM Australia or its dealers. It is not yet clear what action will be taken
KGM has advised ANCAP that the ute’s marketing materials have been updated to the correct vehicle spec. In a statement, KGM said the vehicle had always been manufactured with a 6-airbag configuration, but conceded to errors in its product information.
The Musso EV comes in two powertrains, including 2WD and AWD, and prices begin at $60,000 before on-roads for the 2WD variant and up to $64,000 before on-roads for the AWD version.
