Tesla Model Y is Australia’s best-selling EV model, driven by the technology and ownership experience the company’s products deliver to its customers, and in June was the best selling car of any type in Australia.
But one feature common to other EVs – vehicle-to-load (V2L) – has been missing. But now the company has started to offer a V2L adapter as an accessory, and is enabling this feature on all Premium Model Y vehicles on its configurator.
The adapter had previously been rolled out just to the Performance model, but is now being offered more widely.
For $US80, this adapter, along with Tesla’s Mobile Generation 3 wall connector unit, can power other devices and appliances on the go. This means owners can use electrical devices, with a max output of 2.4 kW with this setup. It is not yet known if or when this is coming to Australia.
That rate is quite a bit below what is being offered by other vehicles like BYD Sealion 7, Xpeng G6 and Zeekr 7X, which offer 3.3 kW. The new 2026 Xpeng G6 ups the V2L output to 6 kW.
Some common use cases people are looking to use the V2L function in are kettles, portable induction cooktops, coffee machines, toaster ovens, and camping lights.
Other owners with V2L-capable cars want to use their car to work from, power laptops, run Wi-Fi routers like Starlink, charge drone batteries, power camera gear, and run mobile professional production equipment. And, of course, to power fridges and other essential devices in case of an outage.
As of the time of writing this article, the Tesla V2L adapter only appears to be available for Model Y Premium models and excludes the more affordable Model Y Standard and Model 3 vehicles.
Last year, Tesla’s official account on X shared that the new Model Y Performance will feature V2L capability: “New Model Y Performance offers Vehicle to Load (120V 20A AC) with Tesla Outlet Adapter”.
This got a lot of people excited since it’s been one of the most requested features, and it debuted on Tesla’s Cybertruck a few years ago as a “Powershare” feature.
Locally, Tesla made the V2L adapter available for $145 for the popular 6-seater Model Y L through the company’s online store.
Tesla notes that this is the only adapter that will be covered by the company’s car warranty, with the online store saying: “This adapter is currently only available with Model Y L vehicles. Your vehicle warranty does not cover damage caused by 3rd party bi-directional vehicle adaptors or chargers.”
