In 2024, Smart, a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and China’s Geely Holdings, launched two EVs in the Australian market, which were a lot bigger than the small city car the brand was once known for.
Now, the brand has finally been spotted bringing back a 2.75-metre, 2-seater EV, with 300 km of range, coming with the new name of #2.
According to regulatory filings by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China, and shared by CNC, the brand will be launching the Smart #2 before the end of this year.
The new model will weigh 1,130 kg and will be powered by a 60 kW motor, developed by Infiniti on, the same company that supplies motors in the very popular Geely EX5 model in Australia.
Although the battery capacity hasn’t been listed in the filings, previous reports have confirmed that the model will come equipped with a 35.7 kWh battery pack, delivering 300 km of NEDC range, likely to be closer to 250 km on the WLTP cycle.
The smallest model from Smart will also pack 15 and 16-inch wheel options as well as two-toned paints.
As part of the imminent launch, the brand has started activities locally in Australia, with a mural painted on the streets of Melbourne by artist Georgia Laurie.
“A work of art in a public space can make someone stop, look up, and rediscover a place they see every day,” Laurie said.
On the back of this, Smart’s Global CMO, Kang Yi, said: “The smart #2 is the evolution of a revolution,”.
“We designed this vehicle to bring playfulness, premium sophistication, and effortless agility back to the modern urban jungle. By teasing our defining halo product through this unconventional artistic exposure, we are building immense anticipation for its return and showcasing our commitment to creating vehicles that are not just means of transportation, but true expressions of individuality.”
From this latest news, it appears that Smart is going back to its roots with the iconic Smart City Coupe, which started production in 1998, followed by the success of the Smart Fortwo city car.
With more details expected to arrive in the coming months, we’d be curious to see if it makes it into markets like Australia, where we of course now have the #2 mural in Melbourne.
