Karmo, Australia’s largest car subscription platform, has partnered with Australian energy giant AGL to manage its existing electric vehicle (EV) subscription fleet and platform operations.
The agreement could also result in Karmo managing AGL’s participation in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, which allows EVs to contribute power back to the energy system and deliver additional value to customers.
The initial focus is the management of AGL’s EV subscription service, which allows customers for a flat monthly payment to drive an EV. Karmo’s service incorporates registration, servicing, maintenance, insurance, and roadside assistance, and the ability to adapt vehicle choice as needs change.
AGL head of eMobility, Mabelle Reyes, said the partnership comes as interest in electrification and electric vehicles continues to accelerate across Australia.
“This builds on our existing EV offers and our broader strategy to electrify the way Australians live, move, and work, whether through EV subscriptions, home charging, public kerbside charging, or tailored energy plans like our EV Night Saver,” said Reyes.
“Over the past year we’ve seen strong and sustained demand for home electrification technologies, including electric vehicles, because of structural factors like cost-of-living pressures, government incentives, and a desire for greater control over household energy costs.
“Uncertainty can be a natural barrier for people considering an electric vehicle, particularly when moving from petrol to electric, and that’s where EV subscriptions can play an important role.”
Karmo, founded in Queensland in 2019 by Nick Boucher, says it is now Australia’s largest car subscription provider – thanks in part to its 2024 buyout of rival Motopool. Karmo also partnered in late 2025 with leading salary packaging and novated leasing provider Smart to launch a flexible novated subscription with a minimum term of just four months.
“We are particularly excited to be disrupting the novated lease space, in conjunction with Smart,” said Boucher of Karmo’s new partnership with AGL.
“For too long, salary packaging has meant strict multi-year financial lock-ins. Our new flexible novated subscription gives working Australians the maximum tax savings of a novated lease, but with the freedom to choose, drive, and swap the latest EVs as their lifestyle dictates.
“The road ahead is electric, and together with AGL, we are making it simpler and more affordable to get behind the wheel.”
