China car giant Geely last December confirmed that its best-selling electric car, the low-cost Geely EX2 electric hatchback, is headed for the Australian market in the second half of 2026.
Now, reports from its home market reveal that the company is about to launch an upgraded version with bigger batteries and more range – adding local interest to a model that is likely to be priced at around $30,000 in Australia.
The new larger battery will be a 47 kWh LFP battery pack packing up to 460 km of CLTC range, according to CNC.
For comparison, in Thailand the larger 40.16 kWh CATL-supplied Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery pack delivers a range of 395 km.
This is likely to be closer to 320 km on the locally used WLTP cycle, so we can expect the new model to be above 350 km of range in the real world.
This would be welcomed by many as the brand aims to keep this models success going after becoming China’s best selling car in 2025 with over 465,000 units sold.
Last month, Geely Australia shared early specs and a pre-order offer on the EX2 as part of the Melbourne Motor Show.
Standard specs for the Australian-delivered Geely EX2 will include:
- Rear-wheel drive platform with additional frunk storage
- Multi-link independent rear suspension
- GEA platform, allowing smarter optimisation of space
- Liquid-cooled battery pack
Six colours will be available to local buyers. These include standard colour White and premium paints including Green, Grey, Beige, Pink, and Silver.
The EX2 is currently sold in China as the Geely Xingyuan and is built on the same Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEA) platform as Geelyās popular EX5 electric SUV, which has sold over 7,000 units locally since its March 2025 launch.
Since launch of the brand, the Australian division has announced this week that it’s delivered its 10,000th car, highlighting the strong demand for its products ahead of the EX2ās arrival.
“Reaching 10,000 deliveries in just 14 months is a significant milestone for Geely in Australia,” Geely Auto Australiaās managing director Alex Gu said in a statement.
“It is a testament to the hard work of the entire Geely Auto team, providing the local consumer with high-quality new energy vehicles that propel mobility in an accessible, value-driven way.ā
We expect the EX2 to be a great value electric option if the price is set around $30,000, or less. That’d compete with the BYD Dolphin and the more recently launched MG4 Urban EV and GAC Aion UT models.
It comes in at around 4.14 metres in length, which is similar to these other electric hatchbacks.
In December 2025, the car was launched in Thailand with two variants, the Pro and the Max trims.
The EX2 has an 85 kW rear-mounted motor for the Thai-bound variants, which can accelerate from 0-50 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.
Inside, this model has one of the largest infotainment screens in its class, thanks to a 14.6-inch screen. Thatās a similar software system to the one found in the locally delivered Geely EX5 SUV.
This model would make a great car for so many looking to get behind the wheel of an EV with elevated fuel prices and want something efficient.
Details on the powertrain specs and pricing will be confirmed closer to the hatchback’s launch in Q3.
Which battery will be offered locally? Time will tell.
