BYD launches new Atto 3 with flash charging, new batteries and a low price

BYD has announced the Chinese pricing of the latest version of the Yuan Plus – which we know as the Atto 3 in Australia – starting at the equivalent of less than $A25,000 and rise to $A31,000 for the top-spec variant.

The latest version of the Yan Plus was unveiled at Auto China 2026, and notably features 5-minute flash charging and a larger body.

The Atto 3 was launched in Australia in 2022 and has sold thousands of units since becoming one of the first lower-cost electric SUVs on the market, and the third generation of the vehicle will feature a refreshed look, faster charging and longer range.

“Loved by over a million people worldwide, the third-generation Yuan Plus arrives today with a refreshed look. Intelligent, dynamic, and stylish, with fast charging and long range, it’s the perfect companion for all-electric travel,” the company said on its Weibo page.

The third-generation Yuan Plus will come with two motors and different battery configurations.

The first is a single rear-mounted motor delivering 200 kW, which is paired with a 57.5 kWh Blade Battery. This variant is expected to deliver 540 km of CLTC range, which is likely to be closer to 450 km of the WLTP cycle.

A more powerful version comes with a 240 kW motor and a 68.5 kWh battery pack, delivering up to 630 km of CLTC range.

Both variants can charge from 10-70% in just 5 minutes using the company’s latest Flash Charging technology, unveiled last month. 10-97% charging can be done in around 9 minutes.

That’s made possible by the new Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery packs that can reach charging speeds of up to 1,500 kW at the company’s Flash Charging sites.

These sites are being deployed at a rapid pace. Recent data showed that the company had surpassed over 25% of its 2026 rollout goal of 20,000 Flash Charger deployments, with over 5,000 sites in operation as of April 2026. These sites span over 292 cities in China.

In terms of size, the new Yuan Plus SUV comes in at 4,665 mm in length, which is larger than the current BYD Atto 3 SUV and shifts the powertrain to a rear-wheel drive (RWD) too, from what is currently sold in Australia.

The new car also has a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, which is seen in many of the company’s models it sells.

There is also a 50 W wireless phone charger in the centre console, and, like many of BYD’s latest cars, the gear shifter has been relocated to the steering wheel. This also makes the interior much cleaner than seen on some early models.

It’s unclear if and when this new model will make it to the Australian market, as the most recent approval documents showed a new Evo variant that could be heading here first, offering an RWD powertrain as well.

We’ll keep a close eye on this model given its importance to the brand in global markets, including Australia and New Zealand.
