A year ago, there was a sighting of a large BYD electric delivery van in China, the international market-bound BYD E-Vali.Ā

Now, the company’s biggest electric model is approved for sale in Australia. This was first spotted by an avid reader of The Driven, David C.

Coming in as the BYD V9, it’s expected to be launched with either 2 or 3 seat configurations.

According to the approved documentation, it will be called the V9 and will be available in Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) configuration.Ā

The new van will come with 150 kW of power on the RWD. Information on the battery isn’t revealed in the approval documentation, but we expect it to be a BYD blade battery with a capacity of around 88 kWh, as seen in previous reports.

Like all the current models, we also expect the V9 to feature Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities.

The van is 6.95 metres long and just over 2.7 metres high. Running clearance has also been provided in the documentation at 156 mm.

This V9 variant weighs 2,920 kg and can tow up to 1,500 kg, with non-braked towing capacity limited to 750 kg as well.

More details on the upgraded BYD V9, including key local specifications and pricing, are likely to be announced later this year.Ā

At this stage, though, we expect the starting price of this model to be closer to $80,000, given the size of the van and its full-electric powertrain.

BYD has expanded rapidly in the Australian market since launching the Atto 3 in 2022, which at the time was one of the most affordable ground-up electric SUVs on sale.

The company had forecast around 40,000 local deliveries in 2025 but exceeded that target by a wide margin, selling well over 50,000 vehicles for the year.

Growth for the brand has been driven by a combination of price reductions and frequent model launches, increasing both affordability and choice for EV buyers.

This has meant greater brand awareness, with even lagging fleet and logistics operators finally making a shift to EVs with BYD’s products, which is where the BYD V9 would fit quite well in.

More details about the van will be revealed closer to the launch, and we look forward to getting behind the wheel when it lands in Australia.
