BYD has unveiled the latest version of its first EV in Australia, known here as the Atto 3, which will feature 5-minute flash charging, and a whole lot more.
The Atto 3, named the Yan Plus in China, was launched in Australia in 2022 and has sold many thousands of units as one of the first lower cost electric SUVs in the market.
The latest version of the Yuan Plus SUV was unveiled at Auto China 2026 in Beijing, featuring the 5-minute flash charging as well as two motors and different battery configurations.
The first is a single rear-mounted motor delivering 200 kW, which is paired with a 57.5 kWh LFP Blade Battery. This variant is expected to deliver 540 km of CLTC range, which is likely to be closer to 450 km of the WLTP cycle.
A more powerful version packs 240 kW and is paired with a 68.5 kWh battery pack, which will deliver up to 630 km of CLTC range.Ā
Both will be able to charge from 10-70% in just 5 minutes using the companyās latest Flash Charging technology, unveiled last month. 10-97% charging can be done is around 9 minutes.
Thatās made possible by the new Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery packs, which will retain the safety credentials of BYDās Blade Battery tech while now incorporating charging speeds of up to 1,500 kW at the companyās Flash Charging sites.
These sites are being deployed at a rapid pace. Recent data showed that the company had surpassed over 25% of its 2026 rollout goal of 20,000 Flash Charger deployments, with over 5,000 sites in operation as of April 2026. These sites span over 292 cities in China.
Getting back to the Yuan Plus SUV, this model comes in at a length of 4,665 mm, which is much larger than the currentĀ BYD Atto 3 SUV.
The new car features the same large 15.6-inch infotainment screen behind the steering wheel as many BYD owners have today.Ā
A 50 W wireless phone charger is also seen in the centre console, and, like many of BYDās latest cars, the inside now features the gear shifter relocated to the steering wheel. This also makes the interior a lot cleaner than the current model.
Itās unclear if and when this new model will make it to the Australian market, as the most recent approval documents showed a new Evo variant, which could be heading here first, offering an RWD powertrain too.
Weāll keep a close eye on this model given its significance to the brand in global markets, including ours.
