Japanese car maker Mazda has released the key specifications of the third EV that it will bring to the Australian market, an electric SUV to be known as the CX-6e.
The new offering follows the release four years ago of the poorly received MX-30, and the more recently unveiled 6e electric sedan, which is due to arrive in the middle of the year.
Prices for the CX-6e have not yet been released, but it is expected to be pitched around the $55,000 mark, given the sedan came in at around $50,000.
Mazda Australia’s director of sales Jarrod Gieschen said the new electric SUV – along with the sedan – would give more choice to its customers.
“This multi-solution approach allows our customers to confidently enter EV ownership, knowing they’re backed by over 100 years of experience and more than 140 trusted dealerships nationwide – a statement that only few manufacturers in Australia can make,” he said in a statement.
The latest model made its global debut at the Brussels Motor Show, and according to the brand, adopts Mazda’s “Future + Soul + Modern” Kodo-design concept.
It features a rear-mounted 190 kW motor, which is fed by a 78 kWh Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery pack. According to the preliminary specifications, this pack can deliver up to 450 km of WLTP range on a single charge and charging it from 30-80% will take around 15 minutes.
The Mazda CX-6e is built in collaboration with Chongqing Changan Automobile Company, which has multiple brands in China, including the locally available Deepal brand, which is distributed through Inchcape in Australia.
Previously, Mazda said that this engineering and tech partnership will help this model deliver on “smart electrification, fast charging and cutting-edge cabin technology”, combined with Mazda’s signature design and well-tuned driving performance.
The Driven saw an early left-hand-drive version of the car in person this week at a preview in Melbourne, and one of the standout features was a massive screen that extends towards the passenger seat, as well as the high-quality materials used throughout.
We didn’t get a chance to drive it on local roads, but that’s expected to happen later this year, ahead of the model’s local arrival in the second half.
