MG has announced pricing in Australia of its upcoming MG4 Urban EV, with a starting price of $31,990 driveaway, which makes it the brand’s lowest-priced electric vehicle offering in the country and also beats the BYD Dolphin on price.
Landing next month, specs of the upcoming affordable hatch have also been announced. The new model will be offered in two variants, with two different battery packs.
The MG4 EV Urban is shorter range, lower cost variant of the MG4, which has been one of the most successful EVs in the Australian market, with more than 13,000 cars sold since its launch in 2023. At this price, the MG4 EV Urban undercuts similarly sized BYD Dolphin, which has been Australia’s cheapest electric hatch over 4 metres in length.
The new model, landing next month, will be offered in two variants, with two different battery packs.
Customers can choose between a 43 kWh battery pack and a larger 54 kWh battery pack and a range starting from around 316 km to just over 400 kms. Both are expected to be Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) packs.
Dimitri Andreatidis, marketing director of MG Motor Australia, said the MG4 has already been a strong performer in Australia and the UK.
“There’s real demand for practical, affordable EVs, and the MG4 EV Urban builds on this by giving even more local drivers a way into electric mobility.
“Given current world events and skyrocketing local fuel prices, we are seeing a new cohort of motivated drivers wanting to explore what an EV could look like in their life.”
The 43 kWh battery pack will be featured in the base Essence 43 variant, with up to 316 km of WLTP range.
Power will come from a 110 kW front-mounted motor, producing up to 250 Nm of torque. This will help the car accelerate from 0-100 km/h in around 9 seconds.
Inside, there are black and grey fabric seats with a 12.8-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Satellite navigation is also standard on the base model.
Outside, the car features quite a nice-looking set of 17-inch wheels along with roof rails and rear spoiler coming as standard.
At the front, there are also LED headlights and daytime running lights (DRL). The headlights also feature automatic functionality which is rare in cars at this price point.
On top of that, there is the MG Pilot ADAS suite offered as standard too, allowing features like highway cruise control.
More range is offered in the Essence 54 variant, starting with a headline WLTP range of 405 km. This variant will feature a slightly more powerful 118 kW front-mounted motor ,which also produces up to 250 Nm of torque. This will help the car sprint from 0-100 km/h in 8.7 seconds.
AC charging speeds of 6.6 kW is on offer for both variants and DC charging speeds of up to 150 kW are available, helping the car charging from 10-80% in around 30 minutes.
Both variants also pack the heat pump, which should help with the efficiency figure. According to the specs, this sits just north of 16 kWh/100 km.
This updated MG4 comes in almost 4.4 metres in length. It also has a running clearance of 130 mm, which is reasonable in an electric hatchback.
The smaller battery pack variants have a tare weight of 1,460 kg, while the second larger pack bumps that up to 1,520 kg.
Unlike the current MG4’s charging port, which is located at the rear of the car, the upcoming model spotted here has it relocated to the front of the hatch, in line with its front-wheel-drive powertrain.
Inside, the new MG4 Urban offers quite a bit of space, with up to 1,266 litres of boot space when the rear seats are folded down.
With seats in place, this volume reduces to 382 litres. There is also an underboot storage compartment, offering an additional 98 litres.

Given the popularity of the current model, the new MG4 Urban could also be one of the company’s best-sellers when it lands, and we can’t wait to get behind the wheel of one to test its efficiency on Australian roads in the coming months.
