First Tesla Model Y L 6-seater EVs land in Australia

Tesla’s new six-seater Model Y L was confirmed last week by Tesla Australia to be arriving on our shores this year, for those wanting more space in the biggest Model Y variant to date.

Already, multiple Model Y L EVs have been spotted in Australia on the back of a truck. “Saw these on my way home in Melbourne down Victoria Pde,” said Mick on X.

These are likely to be showroom cars and were heading towards Tesla’s showrooms around Melbourne.

Previously, the Model Y L appeared in Australia’s ROVER vehicle certification database in late February, confirming it has received ADR approval for local sale.

According to that documentation, this Model Y includes an all-wheel-drive powertrain and features an 88.2 kWh battery.

This is likely to be LG’s Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) pack, used in the AWD variants produced at Tesla’s Shanghai factory.

On the range front, this battery can deliver up to 681 km on 19-inch wheels, according to the previously sighted European approval documentation.

Last year, Tesla launched a new six-seater Model Y L in August, with prices starting at $A72,700 in the very competitive Chinese market.

Reports from local media outlets at the time suggested the model raked in nearly 40,000 orders on its first day, making it one of the most popular variant launches for Tesla in recent years.

Inside, drivers have adjustable headrests for the front seats, providing greater comfort for the driver and front passenger.

In the second row is where it features two “captain’s chairs” with retractable armrests which provide more space than the standard Model Y.

These arm rests can be controlled with the rear seat screen or a button to the side of the seat cushion and are unique only to the Model Y L.

Having sat in and reviewed the car in Guangzhou, China in December, it’s quite a unique design, and I can see how families would benefit from it, as it makes access to the third row easier with the armrest down.

In the rear, there is also the third row with two seats and cup holders on either side, making it a reasonable space for third-row passengers.

The second and third-row seats in the Model Y L can also be folded down using buttons in the boot, delivering over 2,500 litres of boot space, which is fairly large in the mid-size SUV segment.

This is also thanks to the extended wheelbase of the car, which is 186 mm longer than a standard Model Y, bringing the car’s length to almost 5 metres.

On the road, the Model Y L comes with continuously variable dampers found in the Model 3 and Model Y Performance variants.

Details of exact timing, local specs and pricing will be announced closer to its local launch, which from the first sightings might only be months away.
