MG has announced approval for the sale in Australia of its MG4 Urban, which is expected to be its lowest price electric vehicle offering in the country to date.

The new version of MG$ was first teased in China last year, and has now been approval for sale in Australia in September this year, likely with a starting price of around $30,000 – adding to the growing list of affordable EVs in this country.

More details on the specs and pricing for the 2026 MG4 Urban lineup will be released closer to the official local launch in April 2026, but it will come inĀ with two battery pack offerings and multiple variants, with customers able to choose between a 43 kWh battery or a larger 54 kWh battery pack. Both are expected to be Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) packs.

Offered as a more affordable model than the rear-wheel-drive MG4 in markets like the UK, we can expect it to start at around $30,000 locally, especially as competition in this affordable hatchback segment heats up.

Dimitri Andreatidis, marketing director of MG Motor Australia, said the car will have room for four adults, and will have rapid DC charging capability from 10–80% in around 30 minutes.

ā€œWhether you’re a driver seeking an accessible EV vehicle to suit their lifestyle, or wanting to reduce their environmental footprint, the MG4 EV Urban delivers the right combination of space, technology and efficiency,ā€ he said.

Although full specifications have not yet been released, previous approval documentation indicates that this updated MG4 comes in almost 4.4 metres in length.Ā

The smaller battery pack variants have a tare weight of 1,460 kg, while the second larger pack bumps that up to 1,520 kg.

On the powertrain front, two front-mounted motors were listed. The first has a maximum output of 110 kW, while the second offers more power at 118 kW.

Unlike the current MG4’s charging port, which is located at the rear of the car, the upcoming model spotted here has it relocated to the front of the hatch, in line with its front-wheel-drive powertrain.

Inside, the new MG4 Urban has quite a bit of space with up to 1,300 litres of boot space available with rear seats folded down.

This model is expected to be sold alongside the existing rear-wheel-drive model, which has been one of the most successful EVs in the Australian market, with more than 13,000 cars sold since its launch in 2023.Ā

In recent months, we have also seen price cuts on the existing model as part of multiple driveaway offers, with the entry-level 51 kWh version coming in at just over $36,000.Ā

Given the popularity of the current model, the new MG4 could also be one of the company’s best-sellers when it lands, and we can’t wait to get behind the wheel of one in the coming months.
