Japanese car maker Mazda has announced plans to release a second EV into the Australian market, more than four years after its debuted with the MX-30 which found itself outmanoeuvred on price and range.

Mazda says its second EV model is due mid-2026 and it called the 6e, and will mark ā€œthe next era of Zoom-Zoomā€, as it plans to electrify more of its local lineup.

The MX-30, which had little more than 200 kms of range, was discontinued from our market about 18 months ago, so the upcoming Mazda 6e will be the company’s only electric vehicle when it hits the market next year, and will have a range of 500 kms fed by a 78 kWh battery. The price has not yet been released.

ā€œThis is a watershed moment for Mazda,” said Vinesh Bhindi, managing director of Mazda Australia.

The 6e is built in collaboration with Chongqing Changan Automobile Company, which has multiple brands in China, including the locally available Deepal brand, which is distributed through Inchcape in Australia.

According to Mazda, this partnership in engineering and tech will help this model deliver on ā€œsmart electrification, fast charging and cutting-edge cabin technologyā€, combined with Mazda’s signature design and well-tuned driving performance.

This motor is fed by a 78 kWh Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which, according to the preliminary specifications, can deliver up to 500 km of range on a single charge. That range is quite a big step up from 200 km offered on the now-discontinued MX-30 SUV.

Charging this battery from 30-80% can be done in just 15 minutes thanks to the DC fast charging capabilities on offer in the 6e.

In markets like the UK, the 6e comes with a large 14.6-inch touch screen, a screen behind the steering wheel, a heads-up display and quite a plush interior.Ā

There is also 1,500 kg of braked towing capacity on offer in that market, making it easier for owners to tow light trailers.

We are likely to see that in the local version when further specifications, trims and pricing are revealed closer to the model’s launch in Q2 2026.
