No, the Mercedes-Benz EQS – the German carmaker’s upcoming luxury electric sedan – is not set to get a starring role in a box office hit.
It will in fact give owners a chance to view favourite flicks on a “hyper screen” from the comfort of their car seat, according to a recent release issued by the carmaker.
Debuting at the CES 2021 technology event on Monday (US time), the MBUX Hyperscreen will be showcased in the Mercedes-Benz EQS which is expected to be launched in 2021.
This ample curved screen will stretch across the entire width of the EQS from A-pillar to A-pillar, and not only enable passengers to watch movies and shows but also give access to Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX interface which controls infotainment, comfort and vehicle settings.
“With our MBUX Hyperscreen, a design vision becomes reality,” said Gorden Wagener, chief design officer Daimler Group in the statement.
“We merge technology with design in a fascinating way that offers the customer unprecedented ease of use. We love simplicity, we have reached a new level of MBUX.”
According to the German carmaker, the “hyper screen” uses OLED technology to ensure a brilliant display by turning off unused pixels to have the effect of further enhancing the high colour active pixels.
It also stresses the thought that has been put into the vehicle’s interface to ensure users don’t need to thumb through buttons to reach the desired setting: thanks to a “zero-level” screen, major applications can be accessed immediately.
This is constantly updated by self-learning software that Mercedes says uses context-sensitive awareness to choose the most relevant content to show at this top-level, with navigation, radio/media and telephony always front and centre.
“The MBUX Hyperscreen is both the brain and nervous system of the car”, says Sajjad Khan, board member for Mercedes-Benz AG and CTO.
“The MBUX Hyperscreen continually gets to know the customer better and delivers a tailored, personalised infotainment and operating offering before the occupant even has to click or scroll anywhere.”
Other screen specifications revealed by the company include:
- 12 actuators for haptic feedback during operation
- 8 CPU cores
- 24-gigabyte RAM
- 46.4 GB/sec RAM bandwidth
- 141-centimetres wide
- 2,432.11 cm2 area
The high-end Mercedes-Benz EQS is expected to reach the market with an impressive 700km driving range (WLTP) – although this is likely to bear out closer to 600km in real-world driving conditions.
