US start-up Zaiser seeks crowd-funding for 480km “Electrocycle”

A new Colorado-based start-up, Zaiser Motors, is enjoying its first moment in the sun after it launched a crowdfunding campaign for its Electrocycle, an electric all-wheel drive motorcycle which boasts a range of 480-kilometres but a vague promissory price point of “less than $25,000”.

Zaiser Motors launched its crowd-funding campaign in the middle of May with the Wefunder platform – targeting a goal of $US500,000 to build up early stage investment intended to support the design, manufacturing, and distribution of its Electrocycle.

“This fundraising campaign is just the first step in our efforts to electrify motorcycling, protect our planet and positively impact the lives of as many people as possible,” said Anthony Cross, Zaiser Motors’ co-founder and CEO.

“Together, our team’s excellent craftsmanship and technological innovation will deliver an Electrocycle that is more exciting, cheaper to build, safer and better for the environment than anything available today.”

But does Zaiser Motors have something people want?

The Zaiser Electrocycle is a twin-hub electric motorcycle that the company boasts is “safe, stylish, and sustainable” and which is expected to have an all-electric range of 300 miles, around 482 kilometres.

With a removable 17.3kWh battery pack, the Electrocycle – which currently appears to exist only in digital renderings – is expected to have a top speed of 190km/h and acceleration of 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds.

According to the company’s rather anaemic website, the all-wheel drive Electrocycle is slated for launch at the end of 2021 or early 2022, but having raised less than $US12,000 of the targeted $US500,000 in over a fortnight – and this, despite features in Forbes, Maxim, and Electrek – hopes may not be particularly high.

Other highlights of the Electrocycle include custom traction control, auto stabilisation, “cutting edge” safety features including proximity sensors, wearable interconnectivity, and a roadside assistance system, and a modular design that Zaiser says is “ready to keep up with the fast-paced cycle of EV innovation.”

“At Zaiser Motors, we emphasize sustainability, the right to repair and safety,” Cross added, in the company’s initial press release.

“We recognize that traditional internal-combustion motorcycles are currently being phased out, and the existing electric motorcycle market leaves new rider demand underserved.”

“By making use of existing safety systems, years of electric motor innovations and aerospace-quality composites for safety, speed and style, our state-of-the-art Electrocycle is the safest and most rider-oriented electric motorcycle available. Our aim is to recycle most (if not all) of our components within the first 10 years of production.

Additionally, we believe a core element in established motorcycling culture is the ability to work on a bike yourself, which is why we plan to adopt a ‘right to repair’ service philosophy.”

Whether Zaiser will be able to deliver on its technical promises will be a matter of time.

For comparison, though, the Harley Davidson Livewire comes in at a cost of just under $AU50,000 and manages 0-100km in 3 seconds and a top speed just under 180km/h thanks to a 15.5kWh battery delivering all-electric range of 235-kilometres of city range, and 152-kilometres of highway range.

Zaiser would need, therefore, to accomplish some pretty impressive technical miracles to deliver on their own promises, but as we have seen, EV innovation and technological progression is already in high gear, so maybe, anything’s possible?
